School Spirit
With the upcoming school year just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about school spirit.
School sports may be the first thing that comes to mind but school spirit is so much more than sports teams.
The Experience
So what is school spirit anyway and how can you positively affect it? School spirit is the experience the student has while going through their student career. It’s the heartbeat of the school. It’s the feeling they remember for many years to come.
Remember what it felt like when you walked the halls of your high school? Are you filled with excitement and pride or does it make you feel empty and deflated?
Many people carry the pride of their high school throughout their entire life. They get together with classmates to celebrate 10 year reunions, 50 year reunions, and all the way through their lifetime.
They carry their school spirit for many years to come because it is a positive and memorable experience.
Sports and Student Programs
Although school spirit is carried throughout the entire school, we often see it more visibly in sports and other school programs. From the crowd holding signs at the football game to the floats at the homecoming parade, school spirit is very much alive and seen throughout student programs.
For students, the smallest gesture to support them in their passion can go a long way to boost their school spirit. Imagine the feeling your student would have if they saw their biggest fan cheering them on with a custom-made sign.
Keeping the Spirit Alive in a Covid-World
Typically, student recognition is an easy way to boost school spirit. Teachers and coaches pat students on the back, include them in school announcements and even acknowledge performance in school assemblies.
However, in our changing, COVID-world, student recognition can be overlooked. This means you may have to get more creative with student recognition. As you drive through your neighborhood, you may see signs featuring students to their community. It may be different these days, but there are still many ways to boost school spirit.
On the plus side, a yard sign goes a step further with acknowledging the student to their entire community.
Student recognition is crucial to keeping a student engaged and successful so don’t overlook the opportunity to keep the spirit alive.
Adding to the Experience
So how can you improve the experience a student has? Think about why you love going to a ballfield instead of just watching a game on tv. You go for the experience. The lights, the people dressed in team colors cheering, the signs- it all creates the experience we love.
The same goes for our students in school. The signs, the lights, and the team spirit all add to the total experience. From simple yard signs shouting out a job well done to complex bronze memorials that will honor the greatest achievements in school history, we can help make your students’ experience memorable.
