Planning the Project
When you are ready to start a sign project, there are several different things to think about and take into consideration.
You probably thought about what you want on the sign and what you’d like it to say but have you thought about the appropriate size?
Shockingly, you can read a small yard sign (24” x 18”) easily while driving down the road if the text is kept to a minimum and the driving speed is less than 40 miles per hour.
Lettering Size
The first thing you’ll want to consider when ordering a sign is your audience. How far away is your audience going to be when reading your sign? For the best visibility, your font should increase an inch for every 10 feet in distance your audience is.
For example, if your audience is driving down the road and your sign is located 50 feet away, you’ll want the lettering to be no smaller than 5” tall.
So, how far away is your audience going to be? That will help determine how big your lettering needs to be and how much you can truly fit on your optimal sign space.
If they are going to be 50 feet away, you may only get 2 lines of text on a 24″ x 18″ sign.
Sign Size
The other factor you’ll want to consider is how much detail is on your sign.
If your audience is driving, they only have approximately 3-5 seconds to read your sign. Keep that in mind when you’re adding details and info to your sign.
Keep it simple and clear when it comes to the messaging. The less words you use to convey your message, the better off you will be- SAVING YOU MONEY!
Once you’ve determined how much you need to fit on your sign and how big the letters need to be for your audience, you’ll know exactly how big your ideal sign should be.
Pro Tip: Don’t Forget About the Getaway Vehicle!
After your project is created, you’ll swing by the sign shop to pick it up (if you’re local). Just remember that your sign may be larger than the space in your car so plan ahead with vehicle pickup.
We’ve witnessed many customers attempt to pick up a sign they have ordered and have to come back because it wouldn’t fit in their car. Although we love laughing with customers when it happens, it may save you an extra trip if you remember to plan ahead for the size of the sign you’re picking up.
